Fall is one of my favorites. Right up there with the spring and summer seasons. Winter has definitely got my "least favorite season" vote. Now don't get me wrong, I love the Christmas season. I love the glittering snow, snow days especially, baking, and Christmas lights- but the germs though. Having a perpetually compromised immune system and a healthy fear of getting sick has caused me to have a dislike for the winter months where sickness ratios are increased. For years, fall has unjustly felt the effect of my dislike for winter. I mean, Fall is literally the gateway to winter; the doorway for excess germs and sickness. #joyous It wasn't until more recently - like last year recent - that I began to enjoy fall. I have learned to embrace it and have found I actually enjoy this time of year.
The cool, crisp air. The natural warm color palette. Yummy pumpkin rolls. Changing, falling leaves. Adorable pumpkin stands. Fresh squash and sweet potatoes. The countless mums everywhere. Cozy sweaters and blankets. The hint of Christmas, Thanksgiving food, and the renewed urge to bake all the things! Can you just smell the chili and cinnamon rolls?! Fall has taught me that change is inevitable; like it or not, it is going to happen. You can deny it all you want, but ultimately, winter will come. The trees will shed their leaves, the temperature will drop, and those overwhelmingly strong cinnamon pine cones will be on store-shelves yet again. Those who embrace it will be frolicking through pumpkin patches and apple orchards, while those who avoid it will be found locked in their sanitized houses, only coming out for half-price candy after Halloween. Certainly, that which was most feared may come to pass. The bitter sting of the cold, the aching and hurting joints, the slipping on ice and falling flat on your face, or the dreaded and most unwanted germs may make their way into your body. But these moments come to both those who resist and embrace the change equally. However those hesitant of the coming season change miss out on enjoying the beauty around them. Change brings opportunity. Opportunities to enjoy sledding adventures, or pumpkin patch outings; or to ignore them all by being frustrated by the fact that "it's winter, and I hate winter". "Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future." -JFK "To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:" - Ecclesiastes 3:1 Change is inevitable... Growth is intentional. There is no choice whether or not the seasons of life will come, but you can choose your response to it. You can choose to embrace it, adapt, and learn from it, or you can become angry and frustrated while denying the inevitable. Every Winter ends (even if it doesn't seem like it), and Spring will follow. No season lasts forever - whether it's an enjoyable one or not. But in an ever-changing world, the greatest strength is found by holding tightly to our never-changing God. "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever." - Hebrews 13.8 "For I am the LORD, I change not..." - Malachi 3.6a ......Aaaaand, this new season may even turn out to be your new favorite! (Or one of them anyway.)
