Have I mentioned I enjoy lights this time of year? What's not to like about them? At my house we have lights everywhere. Everything lights up. The tree, of course, fiber optic poinsettia plants, electric fireplace, scentsy, and countless other glowing decorations. We have a mini tree in our rooms, and I strung strands of Christmas lights around me and my sisters room as well. I love things that light up or glow in the dark. Its the kid in me. My little niece and nephew are entranced by any form of light. They stare at them for long periods of time. Start them young. :) ... I also know of another thing that is attracted to light.... bugs. Yes, I know, all girls, and some guys, reading this just shuddered. :-) We got some lights to put in our pool this past year. It's so cool swimming at night. Except for one thing. Bugs! They will attack you while you're swimming! That part's not so cool. This year at camp I took a picture of one of the lights in the ball field during capture the flag. Fellow campers know all to well what it's like on that ball field at night. Mosquitoes and chiggers galore come, knowing they'll get a easy meal. They always get me good. But, maybe that's part of the experience of camp; sunburns, unbeatable heat, tornadoes, losing your voice, and mosquito bites!
Christ came as the light of the world. John 8.12, "Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life." As bugs are attracted to physical light, we should be just as entranced with the Light of the world. We should strive to be a light. Matthew 5.14 - 16, "Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it given light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." We have no light on our own. The moon doesn't shine during the night, rather it reflects the sun. We need to reflect Christ. The light we do have, we need to show it. So many teens are saved, yet they hide their light and refuse to show it. - The world is lost in darkness. Why should we be afraid to share with them the light we have. Now, let's focus on light itself for a moment. Light shows us the way. Psalms 119.105, "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." Psalms 43.3, " O send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me; let them bring me into thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles." Light helps us find things. Lost things. Matthew 18.11, "For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost."Light reveals the truth in the darkness. Proverbs 5.21, "For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he pondereth all his goings." Light relieves fears. 2 Timothy 1.7, "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." Light provides warmth and comfort. Psalms 23.4, "Yea, though I walk through the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me." Light brings hope in dark times. Jeremiah 14.8, "O the hope of Israel, the saviour thereof in time of trouble..." Light provides safety. Psalms 4.8, "I will both last me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only make at me dwell in safety." As we enjoy the lights this season, let's remember the Light of the world. Let it be a reminder to us to shine out our light. And let us be reminded of what The Light can do!
