Forever 21 is a popular clothing brand among teenagers and young-adults. Personally, it’s one of my favorites. I’ve had this intense urge to start a mall store chain and call it “Finally 22”. How awesome would that be?! I am not a ‘girly girl’ by any means, but I have my moments. Two of my favorite stores would be Bass Pro and Cabella’s, but I do love the mall. I enjoy fashion, and there is an abundance of it in a mall. (As well as, the over-priced, yet well loved, photo booth!) Among all the malls I have been in during the course of my life, many of which have a ‘Forever 21’, but I have yet to find a ‘Proverbs 31’. This is an interesting age where many outer garments don’t cover as much as undergarments did years ago. The amount of material which is used in constructing an outfit is becoming smaller and smaller. You don’t have to look far to realize the clothing, or lack of clothing, on today’s generation. How has this turned into what is today. A few months ago, (and again last week,) I ran a 5k race. Last year, a so-called ‘professional’ runner stood right in front of me at the starting line. He was wearing a ‘tank-top’ with the arm holes so low, I don’t even know why he had it on. Then, he was wearing some nylon shorts - SHORT shorts; Not only that, but they had large slits in the sides. The image was burned into my mind.. I still cringe at the thought of it. Bleh! Not a good sight. Praise the Lord it was a night race! :) But, this outfit, when worn on a guy, is sickening, yet it is accepted, and even encouraged, for a girl to wear the same outfit. Really?! Hollister, Abercrombie & Fitch, (which happen to be two clothing brands which advertise using models without clothing... why, I don't know.), Under Armour, Nike, Aeropostale, American Eagle, Buckle, Daytrip, Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, Delias, Roxy, Charlotte Russe, Fox, Maurices, Pink, Guess, and Victoria Secret.... these are just a few of the widly known and popular clothing brands of today’s teenager. Search for any of these brands, and you will find outfits that wouldn’t have even been worn as swimwear years ago. The last two brands I mentioned, Guess and Victoria Secret, their names strike me as very ironic.... they leave nothing a secret. Btw, guys, y'all aren't exempt from this subject. Modesty applies just as much y'all, it goes both ways. There are naked people walking the streets daily. Many people do not know the Bible refers to improper covering of the body as nakedness. God say’s that nakedness is more than total nudity, it is the revealing of certain parts of the body that God say’s are off-limits to others. To be naked means “without conventional or usual clothing”. There’s no doubt that today’s society has distorted what ‘conventional or usual clothing’ is, but that doesn’t change the Truth. 1 Timothy 2.9-10 “In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.” Women (and men) are to wear modest apparel. Immodesty was part of the “attire of an harlot”, mentioned in Proverbs 7.10, “And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart.” I am not condoning this type of wardrobe whatsoever. It pains me to see teenagers I grew up with wearing the worlds' closet. but honestly, to some degree, I can understand the pressure. I am a teenager myself. Never being in public school, I have no doubt my life is different than a lot of y’alls, but that doesn’t change the desire to be accepted and ‘fit in’; in some ways, it may even increase it. The pressure to conform is always there no matter who you are or where you’re from. The fight of following the fads of the world, to be popular, is in every persons life. But, I’d rather be called strange by the world, than to be called naked and a harlot by God. What you wear DOES matter. They say, “Clothes make the person”. The world even recognizes the importance of clothing. You can often tell a lot about a person by what they wear. What are you displaying by what you wear? What are you telling the world through your wardrobe? Are you dressing attractively, or dressing to attract? If you’re dressing to attract attention, you will get it, but not from who you want it. If the whole world was blind, who would you impress? Modesty doesn't mean you must look Amish or Muslim. Dressing modestly doesn't mean you must be unfashionable, or frumpy. In fact, the opposite. I think you should dress stylish, otherwise you're giving the wrong impression to those who see you. So, are you displaying the world's idea of fashion? Are you a Forever 21 kind of kid.... of are you a Proverbs 31 kind of lady? Want more reading?
