Philippians 3.7-8, “But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ.” In this passage, Paul is explaining his time as a Pharisee and how gaining the truth in Christ is better than knowledge; he is expressing his ideas and then how much better Christ is. Paul believed Christ was worth everything, we would say that we believe it also, but do our actions back up our words? Let's imagine you were handed a blank piece of paper and asked to write down your goals, your dreams, what you want or need; how you see yourself in five years. What things would fill the page? Would it be a guy? A position? A car, money, friends, a "perfect" family? I remember writing down how I pictured my life to be; everything I desired in life - then just staring at it. Proverbs 3.5-6, "Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." Everything on that list, even if they are "good" things, is worth nothing. Following after those things are not going to provide any satisfaction; trusting in those things to give you fulfillment in life is only going to leave you disappointed and wanting more. You can't trust in your own ways. Your dreams you just wrote down, were they written in pencil, or are they permanent? If He has different plans, would you be okay with that, or would you fight to get yours? Would he still be able to use you, or is the page of your life too full of your plans you won't give up? Or would you say, "You can have *this* space, but not any of the rest"?
On the same note, would you still be content if you lost all of it? Would you be okay if you had absolutely nothing, but you did have Jesus? As long as you had Him, would you be okay if you had nothing else? God wants for you what you would want for yourself if you were smart enough to want it. His ways are higher than ours. His way is the best way. It is not just the best way, but it is the only way to live a joyful, contented life. "Outside the will of God there is nothing I want. Inside the will of God there is nothing I fear." Do you believe your plans are better than His? Do you truly think that what you want is of more value than what He has planned for your life? Is He not worth EVERYTHING? Can He not be trusted with it? Does He not deserve your life? Can you truly say, "I'd rather have Jesus more than anything."
