The IBTeens and I are planning a surprise birthday party for our youth pastor. By the time this is posted, the party will have already taken place, so no risk of spoiling the surprise. :) At the beginning of the planning process, I asked the teens (mainly preteens) to choose a code word for the party. I cannot believe they chose “poodle”. At least it’s unrelated to the topic. :) I think it was hilarious.
I am the event coordinator. Honestly, I like that position the best. I like to be in the middle of all the planning, and in my youth group, that’s probably the best place for me. My OCD is perfect for this kind of stuff. Our goal is to keep it a complete surprise, and not let him know there’s anything going on. Hopefully, he won’t suspect a thing.- Though I doubt we will make it there. We have designated ‘teams’ to help make everything go smoothly. I put all the younger girls together, they are working together as the ‘decoration team’. I also have an ‘entertainment team’ made up of three guys in the group. Everyone is in charge of refreshments, and a few other fun touches. I think this is really good for us though, it’s been an avenue for everyone to work together, come up with ideas, execute them, and trust each other (for example, not to ‘blab’ about it to our youth pastor). I have especially enjoyed watching the little girls get involved. A few of the girls who rarely talk to each other won’t stop talking to each other about it. :) The theme is, muffins; or more specifically, muffin tops. My youth group is big on ‘teasing’ each other. Teasing is a sign of affection, after all. My youth pastor constantly provides us with new ways to pick on him. It’ll be great! We have planned: -strategically designed route to keep the birthday boy busy until the time is right -detailed decorations -an epic video including a recently recorded song, “Do you have a muffin top”, by the IBTeens. -a playlist of songs written specifically for this occasion playlist includes: Bro. Rocky, Thee (my country 'tis of thee) Bro. Rocky (Oh, Soldier) Just a jump of the curb (Just a spoonful of sugar) Loves his food (He is Lord) Day by Day (Day by day) He was crying (Jesus loves me) Hear the story (Lamb of Glory) Bro. Rocky loves his ‘children’ (Jesus loves the little children) Arm pits so gross (God is so good) Fill my mug (Fill my cup) How great my joy (How great our joy) Do you have a muffin top - reprise (Do you know the muffin man) Do you know the muffin man and, the highly requested song, “Boogers” -Themed party games including “Pin the top on the muffin”, “Muffin Relay”, and “Size up-Muffin top” -nearly unlimited amount of muffins (and coffee) -totally awesome gifts (a cookbook - for his muffin top, deodorant, a muffin water bottle, a can of “slim-faster” - I. love. it! , and a one of a kind piece of artwork) - “'Shave' the muffin” (A shaving cream attack on the guest of honor; muffin liners filled with shaving cream getting thrown at him... then, water balloons to wash him off. It will be awesome! ... for us at least.) We went through all this simply to say, “HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” to our favorite (and only) youth pastor, Bro. Rocky. :) We love you! You do a great job with what you have to work with...us. :) We told you some of the things we love about you. Thank-you for.... Balancing the serious with the fun; trying to guide us to who we are meant to be. Listening to our 'criticism'; putting up with put downs. Driving us late at night so we can sit under more godly preaching. Encouraging us to attend meetings, and then giving up your beauty sleep so we can hang out at a bowling alley, or gym. Sleeping in dorms and living in the heat for two weeks out of your year at camp, or days at a time in dorms/hotels during youth rally's. We thank you for the two-plus years of your life you have given to us. Here’s to many more to come! <3
