We pray for blessings We pray for peace Comfort for family, protection while we sleep We pray for healing, for prosperity We pray for Your mighty hand to ease our suffering All the while, You hear each spoken need Yet love us way too much to give us lesser things 'Cause what if Your blessings come through raindrops What if Your healing comes through tears What if a thousand sleepless nights Are what it takes to know You're near What if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise We pray for wisdom Your voice to hear And we cry in anger when we cannot feel You near We doubt Your goodness, we doubt Your love As if every promise from Your Word is not enough All the while, You hear each desperate plea And long that we have faith to believe 'Cause what if Your blessings come through raindrops What if Your healing comes through tears What if a thousand sleepless nights Are what it takes to know You're near And what if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise When friends betray us When darkness seems to win We know that pain reminds this heart That this is not, this is not our home It's not our home 'Cause what if Your blessings come through raindrops What if Your healing comes through tears And what if a thousand sleepless nights Are what it takes to know You're near What if my greatest disappointments Or the achings of this life Is the revealing of a greater thirst this world can't satisfy And what if trials of this life The rain, the storms, the hardest nights Are Your mercies in disguise A very sweet soloist sang this song at camp last week, which happens to be one of my favorite songs. There are a few songs that I found at certain times in my life, and they had such an impact on my life. I love those songs! And this happens to be one of them. I have always wanted to sing this song, but haven’t simply because I have rarely been able to sing the entire song without crying. It is very heart wrenching for me. When I think of it, a lot of negative circumstances that come our way in life are refered to as ‘storms’. But, where would this world be without them? Rain is a good thing. There must be rain in order to grow. There must be storms in our life to help us to grow and make us stronger. Otherwise, we would shrivel and die. It all depends on if you soak it all in, or if you repel it and attempt to keep it out. You must accept your circumstances and learn from them. The rain provides for us. Without rain, there would be not water. Without water, the plants would die, and there would be not food. Without food or water, we would die. In the same way, the rain in our life provides the same. ‘Storms’ bring us closer to Him. They refresh us and give us a new sence of who God is, and who we are. They remind us to depend on Him. They provide huge helpings of grace. They provide opportunities for us to learn and grow, to trust and wait. Rain forces us to our knees. Storms make us slow down and pay closer attention to Him. They make us look to Him. A lot of the times, they force us to our knees and bring us to the point that we cannot do anything and we are begging God to help us. Sometimes He must bring us to the point of complete weekness before we will look to Him. Storms allow us to experience things and learn things that we would not be able to learn any other way. Sometimes, I look around and don’t understand why the rain is still falling all around me. But what I can’t see, or what I don’t notice, is God’s hand of protection over me; His umbrella sheltering me. And while the raindrops are still falling around me, they aren’t on me.... He’s taking in on Himself. I have kept notes through messages, and devotions the past year or so. And I am so glad I have done that. I love to go through them and read them. Here is a page from my devotions one night. It’s simply a paraphrase of Acts 27, but extremely helpful during the downpour of life. “There arose against it a tempestuous wind and it could not bear up to the wind. We being exceeding tossed with a tempest; when neither sun nor stars in many days appeared, all hope that we should be saved was then taken away. - And now I exhort you to be of good cheer, for there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve. Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that is shall be even as it was told me. Howbeit we must be cast upon a certain island. [However] having therefore obtained help of God, I continue until this day.” I will leave you with this poem: Singing in the rain I’ve walked through nights that held no hope I’ve seen how much a life can change with the ringing of the phone. I’ve felt the pain of sorrows sting Yet through it all, My Lord gives me a song to sing. Though the raindrops fall around me And clouds darken the sky It is then that I am learning Not to question ‘why’ Each little rain drop from Heaven above Is a blessing, and a lesson, given with love And as my life is re-arranging My heart is also changing And I am singing in the rain Singing in the rain My God gave me a song to sing And I’m singing in the rain.
