Proverbs 1.1-7 “The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel; To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding; To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity; To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion. A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels: To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” This passage is an introduction to the book of Proverbs; an explanation as to why the book was written. Proverbs is often referred to as the book of wisdom. The focal point of Proverbs is just as it says, “To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding; To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity; To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.” It proceeds to reveal what a wise man does. In turn, we are able to tell what a foolish man does. A wise man will listen to the Proverbs; he/she will listen to wise counsel and they will learn from it. Fools despise wisdom and instruction . A fool is not going to look for wise authority to gain counsel from. A fool is not going to seek out wisdom. A fool will resent those who attempt to give it to them. He will resent correction or instruction instead of learning from it. As for me, this passage brings to my memory of a study I did through the book of Proverbs. Repeated throughout the book is the principal of Listen and Learn: Listen to those in authority, listen to counsel, listen to instruction; and then learn from it. Christian leaders have been around a lot longer than I have; some have seen and experienced more than I ever will. They have watched as generation after generation walk away from God. They know the signs. They have an immense amount wisdom and understanding inside them just waiting for me to learn from. They were teens once, too. All I have to do is listen and learn. I notice, that's a two step process. I can not let it end at hearing them; I must then learn from the wisdom and instruction they give. Proverbs 1.5; "A wise man will hear, and will increase learning..." On that note, I must be careful that who I am learning from is following Christ otherwise, what I learn will be in vain. What good is it to learn something that is of no value or untrue? I must carefully choose those whom I will gain counsel from. Biblical counseling is free, but the price I would pay for not following it is quite costly. Counsel is simply advice or guidance, specifically from a knowledgeable person. It is one of the most untapped resources in my arsenal. When, all I have to do is ask… then listen and learn.
