Our little Penny is 19 weeks old today. We have had the joy of loving our little fur baby for all of 4 months now. She’s grown way too fast, I can’t keep up with her. Certainly, we have had our struggles. I feel like Penny has been a great precursor to children; she has grown our patience, helped us adjust to have another living thing to live with and train. We are still working on fully housebreaking her and some good obedience training. Corgis are great dogs and very smart, but also extremely stubborn. Some days she is the most frustrating thing in existence, but we love her and wouldn't change her for the world. Here are some of our most memorable moments with Penny Parker. Day one. We had no clue of what we were getting ourselves into. We knew we our hearts had been stolen by this tiny thing with claws, and that we were about to embark on a great new adventure.
Her first bath. It wasn’t long before the kid got a bath. Mom saw a flea, so in the tub she went. We would find out later how much she did not appreciate getting wet, but she was so small at that point, she couldn’t fight back too much. 😉 Bark Box. Yes, she’s spoiled. It was a hesitated, but oh-so-worth-it purchase. This dog LOVES it! Her first box she got, she stuck her head in the box, latched onto a toy, and didn’t stop playing with it for the next hour. Penny loves to shred things.. so anything to stop the shredding of the carpet was worth it! (If your dog eats carpet, invest in some bitter cherry spray. It was like night and day for our dog. No more holes in the rug!) The first time she played “fetch” was pretty special. We had tried to teach her what to do, and she just wasn’t getting it. Then Dad comes home, tosses a ball – not expecting anything – and she brings it back… and continues to repeat the process for quite a while. #ProudPuppyParentMoment Getting her first babysitter/ Leaving her overnight. Maybe we are a bit too attached to the small thing, but this seemed a big first step for me. Leaving her alone overnight, I knew she would cry without us there. So a babysitter was a big deal. That one time she got shots and had an allergic reaction to the medicine and I thought we were going to lose her. She refused to move, play, bark, eat… She would lay down and shake. Then I started hearing her struggle to breathe. Thankfully some Benedryl put her to sleep. We went to work and so we sent some of our very caring friends to check on her and she was crazy! I think she was perfectly fine at that point. Or, the other time we almost lost her when I opened the door to put something on the door and she darted out and started running down the road. So there I go, barefoot, tip-toeing through the cold, muddy, some-what sketchy apartment yard. She was in trouble to say the least, but thankful this story has a good ending. When I thought she was playing with a toy instead of getting into something she shouldn’t, so I praised her…. Only to find out she was eating a potato. The praising ceased. That time we thought she was getting so big, so we take her to the tennis courts to play and realize just how tiny she still is. I love watching her chase her tail. She is among the few corgis who still have their tail. She is hilarious to watch. She will in fact catch it. Another thing she enjoys is chilling under furniture. I have this thought that one of these days she is going to be way too big to fit underneath it, but she will still try. I remember when she first began crawling underneath tables and chairs. I thought I had lost her in the house somewhere, and then all of the sudden, she pops out from underneath the chair right in front of me. Penny has such the personality. She loves people, but thinks small children are just big dogs. Penny is terrified of the vacuum and needs to comfort of one of us. She’s obsessed with shoes… and socks… and anything fabric. (Holes in our socks, shredded shoes, and teeth marks on belts prove her obsession with cloth and leather.) She is essentially a small child. We had two straight weeks of no sleep and she cried, or more like screamed, all night. She went through toddler stage or chewing on everything, but I think we may be nearing the end. Our shoes hope so anyway. She has definitely filled a void in our lives we didn’t knew existed until we got her. That should catch you up on all the adventures of Penny Parker. If it doesn't and you are still hungry for more, or just love adorable picture of little corgis, follow her on Instagram (TheMissPennyParker) or look up her hashtag (#misspennyparker). Our dog is just cool like that.
