The other night there was a brand new, shiny, razor sharp tooth emerging through her tender gums. "Teething." There have been many tears and fussy days. She has been grumpy for no reason, not sleeping well, and been very clingy. A real party. On this night, after the typical refusal for bedtime, she went to sleep only to be in tears yet again half an hour later. She was in obvious pain. Now personally, once she’s in bed, I go in to check on her, but I don’t pick her up unless there’s a REALLY good reason. She needs to learn that once she's in bed, she’s in bed to sleep for the night. This night was one of those exceptions. All she wanted was to be held. She just wanted to snuggle in close under a blanket and be rocked. She hurt, and she craved (perhaps demanded) that comfort. Comfort that only I could give her in that moment. I sat there in the darkness feeling her drift off into sleep, listening to her slow breaths. Momma had her, she was good. It reminded me how this can resemble our life. Words can be sharp and painful. Loneliness cuts deep. Simply put, we can hurt. And sometimes there’s good, understandable reason for that pain. In turn, we have the tendency to become irritable, inconsolable (Psalms 77:2, In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord: my sore ran in the night, and ceased not: my soul refused to be comforted.), grumpy, fussy, complainers who don’t sleep well. The pain hits over and over again. As we're lying there in the dark, our Heavenly Father comes and picks us up. Holds us close and we know it’ll be okay. The safety and comfort of this presence is enough. Only then can we rest with the comfort and peace that He alone can give. Psalm 36.7, "How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings.” Y'all, the comfort that this gives. It's like a mother hen. In the midst of a storm, you can find her babies warm and safe under her wings. The same can happen if there is a threat to those chicks, she will often be gathering and protecting them with her wings. The mother hen will always provide a safe, comforting spot for her chicks. A mother will love on and comfort her baby when she's hurting. So much more than those, the presence of our Father offers comfort His children. In His presence, you can trust, rest and fall asleep knowing that you are safe. I don't know about y'all, but that thought was an encouragement to my heart. By the way, I think chickens, especially chicks, are adorable... even if they don't hesitate to peck or chase you for no reason. Ducks on the other hand are just gross. Don't let those ducklings fool you, they are fowl little creatures. Pun intended.
