"I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord... I will sing unto the Lord as long as I live: I will sing praise to my God while I have my being." (Psalm 40.1-3, 104.33) This week in choir we were proposed a question and prompted an answer: Why do you sing? That’s pretty reasonable considering we spend so much time singing throughout the week. I wrote this and received the opportunity to share it with the choir, and I hope it can be a blessing here as well. So, this is why I sing...
I sing because I can. I had always been the child who would get into trouble for "singing too much” or finding really good acoustics in a room and being too loud in there. 😏 I didn't understand people who would refuse to sing until years later when I found myself in some situations that overwhelmed me so much, I was left with the feeling of not being able to sing. I wouldn’t wish those life experiences upon anyone else, but I also would never “wish them away” from my own life. They shaped me to who I am today. Life isn't meant to be easy. I learned that whether or not I wanted to admit it, I was trusting in myself to provide happiness and not the Lord. Singing is for the Lord, and I believe it can be a product of a heart that is right with Him, and it is usually evident. If one is unwilling to sing, can they truly say they are right with God? When relying on Him, through the struggle, there's a peace and a joy that can only be found in Him. With God, within the struggles of life, you can sing. I sing because I should. Psalm 110 expresses the need to sing. Through song, we are given the opportunity to glorify and honor the Lord and we should not take that lightly. He is worthy of everything we can give and so much more! Therefore, while I have the breath He has given me, I will praise Him with it. I sing because others should sing too. “…many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord.” While singing is to an audience of One, music can still be used as a testimony for others. When others see the joy we have from Him that will emit itself through singing, they will wonder at what we have. “Come and hear, all ye that fear God, and I will declare what he hath done for my soul.” (Psalms 66.16) That is why I sing.... what about you?
